Difference between sadness and depression

There is a vast difference between sadness and depression. Many people misunderstand sadness as depression. Sadness is just a state of feeling blue. But, depression is something which is on long term basis. Sadness can be cured by simple change of mood. On the other hand, depression has to be cured with the help of medication and clinical help.

Sadness is a result of particular situation going against us. Depression is a state where a person is in a complete shock. Sadness is short lived in nature. When a person’s mood is light, there is no sign of sadness. But, depression has to be cured with knowing the cause.

Here are some points of difference in sadness and depression.

In case of sadness, a person can relate to situations and feelings. But, in terms with depression a person can’t relate to situations. There is a loss of presence in this case.

In case of being sad, you are with others, but still feeling bad. But, in case of depression, a person wants complete loneliness. A depressed person always wants to remain lonely and remote.   

In case of sadness, there are no problems related to sleep. But, in terms with depression, there is problem related to sleep. A depressed person can’t sleep easily.    

A person in depression usually is dependent on some form of addiction. It has been seen, that any person who is suffering from state of depression takes up excessive smoking and drinking. On the other hand, there are no signs of addictions in case of sadness.

A person in a depressed state always takes to negative feelings and thoughts. Feeling of blame is common in case of person suffering from depression. This doesn’t happen with a person suffering from sadness, because sadness is a temporary phase.

Sadness can’t be mistaken for depression. There is lot of difference between the two conditions.
